Weather.
After the hot weather of the week before, the cooler weather on Saturday was welcome, although the forecast was for some showers
and fresh west to south west winds. We're all used to the summer sea breezes in Western Australia, but this cool change was
pushed in by a cold front, and that means it was going to be windy.
Unfortunately, the weather forecast was spot on, and the winds swung from the west towards the south by Saturday evening, were
indeed fresh to strong and blew all night, gusting at 30 to 35 knots on Sunday morning when the forecast had included a strong
wind warning.
So there wasn't the usual drop in the wind after sunset, or the swing to the south east or east in the morning. Fishing on the
beaches was hard work, and this showed up in the catches presented on the Sunday morning at the weigh in.
For each species, Juniors, Ladies and then Open entrants were invited to bring their heaviest fish up. The fish weights were
first checked on simple balance scales, so that the heaviest fish presented can easily be seen by putting each fish presented
on the scales up against the heaviest fish so far. If the scales go down, that's the new current heaviest fish. Digital scales
measuring to one gram were used as backup, and were used to check and measure the exact weight of the heaviest
fish.
The eligible species were drawn at random from envelopes placed in full view of everyone, so no one knew which species would get
the major prizes, until the second last envelope was opened.

In 2002 the last species drawn out was whiting, so the winners won the major cash prizes with whiting, even though heavier fish
of other species were caught and won other prizes. See 2002 Mandurah 500 Report
for all the details of the January 2002 event.
