Moreton Bay Marine Park

Some estuary, rock and beach and offshore waters in this area are in the Moreton Bay Marine Park. Fishing is prohibited in all green zones.

Estuary Championship

The sheltered estuaries on the Sunshine Coast provide excellent fishing for bream, whiting, flathead, tailor, luderick, grunter, mulloway, trevally and gar. All three rounds of the Estuary Championship will be fished in three estuaries. Land based anglers will catch fish in all estuaries. Hire boats are available.

The first is Pumicestone Passage, over 25 kilometres of sheltered water between the mainland and Bribie Island with numerous islands, sand banks, channels and creeks. This area is in the Moreton Bay Marine Park and has two green zones (where fishing is prohibited.)

Boat ramps are available at both ends of the passage. The northern boundary is an imaginary line across the Caloundra Bar from Deepwater Point to the Tip of Bribie Island. The southern boundary is the northern side of the Bribie Bridge.

The second is the Mooloolah River about 15 kilometres north of Caloundra. The lower reaches of the river has numerous canals, marinas, a boat harbour and lots of boat traffic but still provides good catches.
There are good boat ramps on both banks. The only boundary is an imaginary line across the end of the rock walls at the river mouth.

The third is the Maroochy River about 25 kilometres north of Caloundra. The river has numerous islands, sand banks, channels and creeks. Some areas become very shallow at low tide. The better boat ramps are on the southern bank.
The only boundary is an imaginary line across the river mouth from the end of Black Bank on the northern bank to the most northern point of Cotton Tree Caravan Park on the southern bank. Pincushion Island is out of bounds.

Rock and Beach Championship
The beaches on the Sunshine Coast provide excellent fishing for tailor, dart, bream, whiting, flathead and mulloway while the headlands also produce tailor, bream, mulloway, mackerel, and trevally.

The Rock and Beach Championship will be fished on about a 100-kilometre section of beach from Noosa, north of Caloundra to the southern end of Bribie Island in the south. There are numerous rocky headlands in this area including Noosa National Park considered by some to provide the finest rock fishing areas in Queensland.

4WD-vehicles are not permitted on any of the mainland beaches. 4WD-vehicles are only permitted on Bribie Island's northern beach with access via North Street, Woorim. Permits are required and are available from Queensland Parks and Wildlife by calling 131304, on line at www.epa.gov.au or from Surfside News, 10 North Street, Woorim.

Boat travel from Caloundra to the northern end of Bribie Island is permitted. Competitors must then walk across the island to the surf beach.

Offshore Championship
Offshore waters on the Sunshine Coast abound with mackerel, cobia, trevally, tuna and reef fish - snapper, pearl perch, parrot, sweetlip and cod. All these fish are found in similar areas - around deep and shallow reefs or islands from close inshore to Wide Caloundra (30 kilometres from Mooloolaba) and the Barwon Banks (45 kilometres from Mooloolaba).

Hire boats may be available and charter boats can be booked.
