Bay Fishing for Herring, by Gordon and Margaret Pilgrim.
Herring fishing is a great sport and rewarding for the excitement it gives for such a small fish.
They have a big mouth so you can catch them on most sized hooks, usually about a number 6, either suicide or limerick hook on a 4 to 7kg line, best if not weighted.
They will bite most bait but prawns (raw) are the best.
Put out an oil slick from the anchored boat drifting onto a reef or weed bank, entice then with a burley of pollard mixed with fish oil or chicken fat, mixed and not too wet, also throw in a few bread crumbs. Once hooked they will give you a good fight, and will often spit out the bait or hook, as they surface, so be quick when you retrieve them.
Recipe for Herring.
There are various ways to prepare herring - you can scale and gut them and eat them whole, skin and fillet them, or fillet them leaving the skin on. You can smoke them, barbecue, pan fry or deep fry in batter, they are an excellent fish for fish cakes as they are full of flavour.
Margaret's Recipe
Here is a recipe for fish cakes, which we love:
6-8 herring fillets - cooked in the microwave for 2-3 minutes
1-2 potatoes, cooked and mashed
1 finely chopped onion, or 6 spring onions
1 egg
1 tablespoon of parsley
1 tablespoon of Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon of curry (if liked)
Mix all together, adding one tablespoon of bread crumbs to firm the mixture, roll in more toasted breadcrumbs, and cook in hot oil in fry pan.
